Kleanthis G. Xanthopoulos, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer

Kleanthis G. Xanthopoulos, Ph.D. has been the President & Chief Executive Officer of Regulus Therapeutics, Inc. since December 2007. Before joining Regulus, shortly after its formation, Dr. Xanthopoulos was a managing director of Enterprise Partners Venture Capital. Prior to that, he was a co-founder and served as President and Chief Executive Officer and Director of Anadys Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ANDS) from its inception in May 2000 to November 2006. From 1997 to 2000 he was at Aurora Biosciences (acquired by Vertex Pharmaceuticals) serving as Vice President. Dr. Xanthopoulos participated in The National Institutes of Health Human Genome Project and was a Section Head of the National Human Genome Research Institute from 1995 to 1997. He was an Associate Professor of Molecular Biology at the Karolinska Nobel Medical Institute, Stockholm, Sweden from 1991 to 1995, and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at The Rockefeller University from 1987 to 1990. An Onassis scholar, Dr. Xanthopoulos received his B.Sc. in Biology with honors from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and received both his M.Sc. in Microbiology and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Stockholm, Sweden. Dr. Xanthopoulos is a member of the board of directors of Anadys Pharmaceuticals Inc., Sente Inc., Stratos Genomics Inc., and an executive board member of BIOCOM, Southern California's life science industry association, where he chairs the Capital Formation Committee.

Before joining Regulus in February of 2008, Dr. Linsley was an Executive Director of Cancer Biology at Merck Research Laboratories. Dr. Linsley joined Merck upon its acquisition of Rosetta Inpharmatics LLC, where he held a variety of positions, most recently Vice President of Research and Development. Prior to joining Rosetta Inpharmatics, Dr. Linsley was a Director of Immunology at Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he co-discovered and aided clinical development of immunomodulatory drugs abatacept (Orencia) and belatacept. Dr. Linsley conducted postdoctoral research in the department of Genetics at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. He received his Ph.D. at the Molecular Biology Institute of the University of California, Los Angeles, and his B.S. from Auburn University where he graduated magna cum laude. In addition to participating on the editorial board of several scientific research journals, including the Journal of Immunology, Dr. Linsley has published over 220 scientific publications and is an inventor on more than 35 issued U.S. patents.

Before joining Regulus in August of 2008, Dr. Garry Menzel was a Managing Director and Global Head of Life Sciences for Credit Suisse. He joined Credit Suisse in 2004, serving a broad range of biotechnology and pharmaceutical clients around the world, raising capital and negotiating merger agreements. Prior to joining Credit Suisse, he was a Managing Director and Global Head of Biotechnology for Goldman Sachs. Dr. Menzel joined Goldman Sachs in 1994 and was a founding member of the Healthcare Group. Prior to his career on Wall Street, Dr. Menzel was a strategy consultant for Bain & Company, working on a variety of operational projects in Europe and Asia. Dr. Menzel earned a B.Sc. with Honors in Biochemistry from the Imperial College of Science & Technology in London, England in 1985, a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Cambridge, England in 1988, and a M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1994. He is an Associate of the Royal College of Science. Dr. Menzel is a member of the board of directors for both the Institute for Systems Biology and the Epilepsy Therapy Project, where he chairs the Business Advisory Committee.


Hubert C. Chen, M.D.

Hubert C. Chen, M.D., Vice President of Translational Medicine

Before joining Regulus in August of 2009, Dr. Chen was senior director of clinical research at Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. where he led preclinical and clinical programs in obesity and type 2 diabetes. Previously, he led the early development of drugs for type 2 diabetes and metabolic disorders as associate director of medical sciences at Amgen Inc. He previously served as assistant clinical professor of medicine at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and was a clinical fellow at both UCSF and Harvard Medical School. He performed his postdoctoral research at Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease and his medical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Chen received an M.D. degree from Columbia University and a B.A.S. in political sciences and biological sciences from Stanford University.
